Module description

Promoting the health and wellbeing of the individual requires an understanding of the wider issues, including environment and work safety issues, heredity, lifestyle, education, social economic factors and media influence. This module expands on some of the themes introduced previously.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:



  • To stimulate the learner to have a wider interest in issues of public health, health promotion and disease prevention.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Discuss the role of local, national, international and environmental health agencies in the relationship to lifestyle, economic status and health including measures/calculations to interpret and present information.

  2. Examine the effects of drug, alcohol, diet and smoking on health, mental and wellbeing.

  3. Critique the local and national disease prevention and health promotion measures and consider the role of the Assistant Practitioner/Nursing Associate in promoting health and wellbeing.

  4. Outline the principles of the Health and Safety at Work Act and the role of the Assistant Practitioner/Nursing Associate in maintaining and monitoring health, safety and security of self and others.

Module information

Promoting the health and wellbeing of the individual requires an understanding of the wider issues, including environment and work safety issues, heredity, lifestyle, education, social economic factors and media influence.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via a variety of teaching methods:

  • Lectures will cover key concepts, supported by practical sessions and the use of simulated practice to enable the students to make the links between theory and practice.
  • Students will deliver a poster presentation exploring local, national and international approached related to a lifestyle issue.
  • Additional support will be provided through individual and group tutorial sessions.
  • Some student-led sessions are included.

Lectures: Will be undertaken by the module lead and other members of the lecturing team.

Independent: Some independent group work is undertaken during sessions. Time has been specifically allocated for self-directed and student led learning at various points in the module.

Placement: The learner is employed in clinical practice and will not attend additional placement.

Online: Some elements of e learning are included which may involve making contributions to a discussion forum or accessing self-directed teaching and learning exercises.

Tutorials: All students are expected to meet with the tutor at least once during the module. Personal /group tutorials can be arranged with the module lead. It is the student's responsibility to attend group tutorials and to arrange any personal tutorials with the module lead.

Skills: Students will be provided with opportunities to practice skills relevant to the module. Practical sessions to support clinical practice and assessment will provide opportunity to reflect on practice.
