Module description

This module enables MHWPs to deliver wellbeing-focused psychologically-informed interventions that support connectedness, hope, identity, meaning and empowerment (CHIME). 


Trainee MHWPs will learn to set collaborative goals with people with severe mental health problems and to deliver seven interventions according to an intervention manual. The interventions will be applied with appropriate flexibility within the context of a positive collaborative working relationship, whilst maintaining fidelity to the interventions. It will also embed the routine use of patient-reported outcome measures to support collaborative evaluation of progress.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To enable students to develop the knowledge and critical awareness of a range of evidence-based interventions used in goal-focused treatment.

  • To enable students to build on the skills gained in previous modules to ensure collaborative practice.  Trainee MHWPs will learn how routine patient-reported outcome measures support clinical decision making and evaluate progress. 

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate knowledge,  understanding and competence in the collaborative construction of a 5-areas formulation to inform psychologically-informed interventions;

  2. Demonstrate competence in the collaborative goal setting for wellbeing-focused psychologically-informed interventions, including the appropriate involvement of families and carers

  3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how to maintain a therapeutic alliance including working with motivational difficulties and readiness to change

  4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of when not to intervene, or to pause or end an intervention.

  5. Demonstrate knowledge and  understanding, and the ability to apply in practice, the effective use of routine patient-reported outcome measures

  6. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of wellbeing-focused psychologically-informed interventions

  7. Demonstrate understanding and competence in dealing with endings safely and appropriately, including Relapse Prevention/Staying Well

  8. Demonstrate an appreciation of the worker’s own level of competence and boundaries of competence and role

Module information

The syllabus for this module is informed by the National Curriculum for Mental Health Wellbeing Practitioners – Specialised Adult Mental Health as written by NHS England.


The teaching will include:



  • Developing critical understanding and knowledge of a range of interventions, including:




    1. Behavioural Activation and Graded Exposure using the “GOALS” programme

    2. Problem-solving skills

    3. Improving sleep

    4. Recognising and managing emotions

    5. Guided self-help for bulimia and binge-eating

    6. Building confidence

    7. Medication support – based on information-giving.




  • Relapse prevention

  • Setting goals and including the wider team where appropriate

  • Developing and maintaining a therapeutic alliance

  • Appreciation of the limits and boundaries of the MHWP role.

Learning and teaching methods

Skills based competencies will be learnt through a combination of clinical simulation in small groups working intensively under close supervision with peer and tutor feedback and supervised practice through supervised direct contact with patients in the workplace.

Knowledge will be learnt through a combination of lectures, seminars, discussion groups, guided reading and independent study.
