This module aims to further expand students knowledge on public health issues, incorporating psychological and sociological factors that affect health and healthcare delivery. It uses as its foundation the knowledge and understanding developed in the Psychosocial Approaches to Nursing Care module, taken in the first year.

On successful completion of this module, the learner will be able to:
identify health needs and introduce health promotion measures to their practice to enhance well being and health status;
demonstrate understanding of the physiological, psychological and social effects of illness and disability within social and cultural contexts and the changing needs of patients over the lifespan;
demonstrate an understanding of primary care and Identify the policy frameworks underpinning the developments in primary care and public health practice;
consider specialist nursing roles in supporting people in community settings taking into account an ever changing population with increasing socioeconomic variables.
