The module will support students throughout the duration of the second placement including: preparation for placement, development of knowledge and skills relevant to practice, support for reflection, professional and personal challenge and for evaluation of own practice.
All third year social work students have to complete a 100 day placement. The placements are within the statutory sector and either an adult or child and family placement
To prepare students for employment as a Newly Qualified Social Worker
The module will support students throughout the duration of the second placement including: preparation for placement, development of knowledge and skills relevant to placement, support for reflection, professional and personal challenge and for evaluation of own practice
On successful completion of this module, the [learner] will be able to:
1. Evaluate assessment processes and outcomes and identify best practice within contemporary social work settings responding to potential conflicting values and expectations
2. Analyse holistic assessment and detail significant elements of practice that contribute to effective working with families and individuals.
3. Explore and evaluate own practice and approach with reference to professional body (Health and Care Professions Council) Standards of Proficiency.
4. Identify, engage with and integrate social work theory and practice recognising own and others, accountability, strengths and limitations appropriately.
Learning activities will include tutor led presentations and group discussions related to practice placement. Sessions will include understanding expectations related to practice placement Level 6 Workbook and Handbook. The assessment of own learning and development needs and identifying placement opportunities to demonstrate development against the Professional Capabilities Framework within the Learning Agreement. The student's formative assessment will be supported in the self-reflective midway review to demonstrate progression and further development for remainder of placement. The learning activities will be concluded with supporting the students in summative assessment and reflection of their final review by demonstrating their development in meeting the Professional Capabilities as expected at the end of first placement.
In the reflective review the student will apply critical reflective exploration of own learning and development over the three years of study. The student will integrate knowledge from other modules, practice and self-study to complete the assignment. The assignment will be introduced in a lecture and support via individual tutorial sessions as requested by the student.
Overview:
The module will combine a number of different teaching approaches, incorporating lectures, group work, computer skill based sessions and student led session to introduce key concepts in social work practice while relating it to everyday practice.
Lectures:
Lectures by module lead and colleagues.
Independent:
Self-study of essential and recommended literature including revisit modules from first, second and third year for completing assignment. Links with other modules including Practice Interventions and Critical Reflection and Professional Challenge will be essential and will support the student to examine the practice of holistic assessment and effective inter-disciplinary working.

100 Day placement in statutory sector

Tutorials:
It is the student's responsibility to seek tutorial support with the module lead as needed.
Skills:
As part of their independent learning the student will be expected to engage in a range of research related activities: searching the literature, visiting the library, attending seminars and participating in conferences (where appropriate).
