Module description

Building on Introduction to Sports Therapy this module develops the students skills in assessment and diagnosis and explores the treatments available to sports therapists in their practice. Therapeutic modalities will include soft tissue techniques and other manual techniques, including spinal and peripheral joint mobilisations. The use of taping will also be considered. Students will learn to undertake a reasoned approach in their practice.

Module information

The module will consist of taught sessions to introduce key concepts of treatments of manual therapies, taping and massage. From this paired and small group activities with practical demonstrations of treatments will be utilised to assist practical skills instruction. Problem based learning will allow students to explore the presentations and treatment of common sports related injuries acknowledging the process and timings of healing and repair.

Learning and teaching methods

The learning, teaching and assessment of this module are closely integrated. A variety of teaching approaches will be used. Subjective and objective assessment sessions will begin with short whole group lecture to introduce the aims and structure of assessment. Applied examples of how this knowledge can be of value in a practical and real life context will be interwoven into these taught and student led sessions. Interactive theory classes will be used to introduce and develop knowledge and application of manual therapies and taping interventions. There will be tutorial sessions for collaborative learning through group work and independent study, both directed and self-directed.
