Preparation in the principles of supervision and feedback ensures that students are ready to act as practice supervisors and are ready to learn to become practice assessors at the point of registration. Students will consider approaches to clinical and practice supervision and how these contribute to the development of peers and learners. Students will have the opportunity to supervise and coach less experienced students in both practice and university-based/simulated setting (e.g. in Person-Centred Care 1 and selected other modules.)
Students will enhance and develop awareness of cultural competence, processes of constructive feedback, reflective appraisal and formative and summative assessment. They will be encouraged to develop approaches to coaching and supervision whilst considering how to challenge circumstances that impact upon the quality of a learning environment.
This module enables students to develop proficiency in evidence-based approaches to coaching, supervision, feedback and assessment to support a range of learners in the clinical learning environment, as well as managing their own continuing
1. Demonstrate effective supervisory and coaching practices when working with and facilitating the development of students and other learners.
2. Critically apply principles of providing, receiving and using constructive feedback in effective interpersonal learning environments and amongst professional and interprofessional teams.
3. Act as a role model for, and regularly seek constructive feedback on own performance from, others when providing nursing care, advocacy and support for people and colleagues.
4. Critically apply the principles and processes of making reasonable adjustments for learners, ensuring that adjustments comply with both legislative and professional regulatory requirements.
5. Monitor and evaluate the quality of care provided by others, and critically reflect upon the principles and application of processes used in performance development, performance review and performance management.
6. Contribute to supervision, debrief and team reflection activities to promote interpersonal, team and organisational learning and improvement.

Lectures
Interactive lectures which introduce and appraise principles of and approaches to, learning, teaching, feedback, supervision and coaching will be delivered by keynote speakers, and educators from nursing practice.
Simulated practice
Opportunities will be created to apply principles through simulated scenarios in supervisory practices and gain confidence. The placement map deliberately allows year 1 and 3 students to be in practice and university together to create conditions where coaching and giving feedback can be practiced in a facilitated environment.
Tutorials
Students will be provided with opportunities to reflect upon the principles and practices of supervision co-facilitated with peers, clinicians and academic staff.
