Module description

The concept of reflective practice has gained considerable favour among professionals and educators in recent years. Occupational therapists often face unique and challenging situations that produce personal, professional and ethical dilemmas, conflicts and problems. These situations may be linked to client interventions, occupational therapy roles, multidisciplinary and multi-agency working and the contexts of practice. Reflective practice promotes flexibility of approach, a critical view of practice, a sense of confidence in professional identity, and a clearer focus for evaluating the actions of self and others. This module provides a facilitating environment where such development can take place, contextualised within a wide framework of practice environments and based on students' experiences in placement.

Learning and teaching methods

Overview: Although lecture & discussion will be used to explore the concept of reflective practice and underpinning theoretical concepts, a substantial amount of time will be devoted to interactive group work and later preparatory presentation sessions to begin to develop the habits of mind needed to be a reflective practitioner. Much of the "trigger" material for discussions will be based on themes arising from practice placement experiences. Reflective development forums run throughout the module and offer students the opportunity to, develop, consolidate and record experiences emerging from previous sessions. It is strongly recommended that you keep a sessional reflective record throughout the module. These notes can be used to develop issues within your assignment Lectures: will be interactive and involve drawing on placement experiences.
