Module description

This module will introduce you to the knowledge, skills and placement style of learning that will enable you to begin developing your readiness for becoming an SLT in the multi-professional workplace.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To develop professional identity and skills essential to becoming an SLT.

  • To provide opportunity to integrate academic learning from term 1 and current modules.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate understanding of the professional values expected of registrant Speech and Language Therapists.

  2. Begin to develop professional identity as SLTs working as part of multi-professional teams.

  3. Demonstrate emergent professional skills in placement locations e.g. linking language and literacy skills across the lifespan / augmented communication

  4. Begin planning for lifelong professional development.

Module information

Placements in varied settings, across the lifespan will be offered with supporting university workshops to develop key skills

Learning and teaching methods

Taking a developmental approach to the programme, this first speech and language therapy placement module will combine preparation for the workplace led by University tutors in University and 15 days of placement in varied locations representing cross lifespan opportunities; students will be placed within multi-professional teams in partner organisations e.g. schools, headway, residential homes, day centres.
