Module description

This module introduces students to core skills required for academic study, professional thinking and lifelong learning.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To develop understanding and application of expected and required academic and professional skills and responsibilities.

  • To introduce the concept of professional regulation and personal responsibility for your continued professional development.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate understanding of academic and professional requirements and responsibilities for continued professional development.

  2. Demonstrate effective use of key resources in relation to academic and professional skills and responsibilities.

  3. Demonstrate critical thinking in relation to academic and professional skills and responsibilities.

Module information

Taking a developmental approach to the programme, this early module will provide opportunities for interactive learning supported by key lectures. Small group work and skills practice will form the basis of the exploratory learning nature of this module. The emphasis will be to commence your development of academic thinking and writing skills in readiness for future modules.

Learning and teaching methods

The module will be delivered via:

  • One day a week throughout the autumn term.

You will carry out mini tasks (e.g. library search, article appraisal, reflective statement) independently to embed the skills introduced in formal teaching.

Part 2: Choice of:

  • Maximum 300 words written reflective statement.
  • Maximum 2 minute reflective discussion podcast (with transcript).
  • Maximum 250 words on an A3 poster presenting reflection.

  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam.
