Key module for

CERXL518 Health and Social Care

Module description

This module will provide students with the knowledge and skills required to work effectively as a practitioner within various health and social care settings. Through extensive simulated learning, facilitated by a range of healthcare professionals, students will have the opportunity to gain experience of key care practices and develop these in a safe and controlled environment.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:

• To provide students with the knowledge and skills required to enable them to deliver and lead competent health and social care practices
• To allow students to explore and advance their own practice in a safe and controlled environment through simulation
• To place the development of the role of the health and social care practitioners in the context of a learning continuum in partnership with healthcare organisations, patients and higher education.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module students will be expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate competence carrying out the wide range of skills, tasks and responsibilities prescribed within the skills book, including providing leadership and mentoring to others.
2. Demonstrate practice that actively promotes dignity, human rights and respects diversity.
3. Demonstrate effective communication skills, identifying and addressing barriers to communication.
4. Identify and address barriers to communication.
5. Apply and support others to adhere to safeguarding procedures.
6. Apply person centred approaches to promote health and wellbeing.
7. Evaluate own practice and identify professional development opportunities.

Module information

This module will cover a wide range of health and social care topics, aligned with the Care Certificate and Level 4 Lead Care Practitioner occupational standard. This includes the following:

* Tasks and responsibilities
* Dignity and human rights
* Communication
* Safeguarding
* Health and wellbeing
* Professional development

The module features extensive simulated practice, utilising the latest technology and our purpose-built simulated practice spaces on campus to allow students to learn in a safe and controlled environment. Simulated practice sessions will run 1 day per week during term time and will be complimented with Leadership Workshops on a termly basis.

Learning and teaching methods

Overview: Students will be provided with realistic practice for developing proficiency in person centred care through varied and challenging simulated scenarios throughout the module. Students will be able to learn through trial and error, allowing them to make and correct practice errors without adverse consequence and so improving individual capabilities to ensure that they are ready for the workplace. Teaching: A wide range of electronic media such as PowerPoint, video clips, images and audio will be utilised. Case studies, role play and scenario-based teaching will also be used to facilitate independent and group work activities. Lectures will be delivered on key related topics within other modules running throughout the wider programme (CertHE) and linked to skills in this module. Tutorials: Personal and group tutorials are available throughout the module, and it is expected that students meet with the module lead at least once during the module to discuss written work. It is the student’s responsibility to attend group tutorials and to arrange any personal tutorials with the module lead. Resources and instructions are available on MOODLE. Independent: There are several activities used within the module to promote independent learning as well as module material to direct students to key resources. Online: Virtual Learning Environment (MOODLE) utilised as well as Listen Again and Panopto. A range of forums, screen casts and interactive learning activities will be used to support learning. Simulated Skills: All students will be provided with opportunities to apply their knowledge and develop the skills required through simulated practice sessions with relevant equipment used within health and social care provision. Cutting-edge technology such as Virtual Reality (VR) scenarios, artificial intelligence (AI) and realistic manikins will also be used within dedicated simulated practice areas to simulate real-world practice, scenarios and challenges. Overall, the aim is to simulate health and social care situations/scenarios in a range of ways in order to allow students to learn and develop the required skills & behaviours in a safe and controlled environment. The plan for this module is to use the purpose-built simulation wards, therapy labs and flats here on campus to run scenarios that simulate real-life health and social care situations. This could be using manikins (already purchased) to simulate patients or role playing with staff and classmates. Other programmes within the school have also used actors from East 15 or SU societies so this is an approach I wish to explore further. Health and social care specific equipment such as patient hoists and diagnostic/treatment aids (already purchased) will also be used to simulate the skills needed to work within a range of roles within the sector. The school also owns high-tech virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) based software & equipment that would allow students to be immersed in virtual environments and act/respond according to how pre-programmed scenarios play out. These experiences would not be extensive due to the limited amount of equipment we have but it would add an exciting dimension to the teaching and learning. Plan is to deliver two 2.5 hour simulated practice sessions per week, across the whole academic year. This should allow multiple opportunities to learn, practice and be assessed on the skills and behaviours required, in a number of different environments/settings. Simulated practice sessions will be led by the programme lead but healthcare professionals from across the school will contribute to the teaching, modelling & demonstrating best practice in the specific skills and providing instruction in a supportive way. Utilising specialist teaching support from across the school should allow students to benefit from profession specific expertise and give good insight into the various H&SC professional undergraduate programmes available at Essex. Study Skills: There are formative activities that are included within the module to assess the acquisition of necessary skills such as essay writing, use of IT and communication skills. Leadership Workshops: The module will also contain three half-day leadership workshops. These will introduce students to the fundamental principles of leadership, mentoring and supervision within health and social care. These have been included to ensure that students have the theoretical underpinning for the leadership and mentoring skills required in the skills book assessment. Theoretical/academic underpinning for all other subjects related to skills are covered in the other academic modules within the course.
