Module description

United States Politics is designed to survey a wide range of topics in the study of political institutions, policy-making, and elections in the United States. The module explores the American political system with a focus on providing students with a deep understanding of both theoretical perspectives and contemporary practical issues facing the US political system, as well as providing a framework for students to develop an original perspective on each.

The module focuses on analysing the origins and logic of the US policy-making process, the means by which political actors seek power and influence in the American system, and the state of democratic representation American society. We will also explore issues related to gender, race, and ethnicity in American politics. Students will gain a strong working knowledge of the American political system and an understanding of approaches to research on this topic area.

The module provides MA students with a framework to analyze the politics of the United States and the background necessary to conduct academic and professional research on this topic. The module surveys the political science research on the behavior and institutions of the United States political system and provides an opportunity to apply research skills and derive original insights into the topic. Students will develop skills suited to academic and professional analysis of the political context in the US from an international perspective.

MODULE DESCRIPTION

United States Politics is designed to survey a wide range of topics in the study of political institutions, policy-making, and elections in the United States. MODULE STRUCTURE AND TEACHING

This module is a seminar and requires significant student engagement and leadership. With the guidance of the instructor, students will take turns presenting course material and leading weekly discussions. It is required that all students engage in critical and thoughtful debate about each week’s material. When leading seminar, students can choose the presentation format that best allows them to present the week’s materials (i.e., can use Powerpoint or not) and should formulate questions and topics for discussion. For those not presenting on a particular week, they should come prepared to participate in thoughtful exploration of the week’s topic, having read all the weekly material.
