Module description

The purpose of this module is to consolidate professional and personal learning
The module will also provide a focus on the development of techniques and strategies for self-management of your continuous professional development, critical self-reflection of professional experience and application within an organisational setting as well as provide an understanding of the role and relevance of research for managers. The module will also provide opportunity to develop a range of skills to prepare you for career advancement and employment opportunities.

Module aims

This module aims to enable you to:

1. Critically reflect on professional and personal development:
The role of lifelong learning in career development;
Identification of career and personal goals.

2. Evaluate and review the key employment opportunities presented by the hospitality industry:
Understanding personal strengths and weaknesses in seeking employment opportunities;
Developing a professional cv;
Making a job application;
Interviewing techniques;
The role and importance of professional associations and networks;
The importance of ethics and values in personal and corporate behavior.

3. Construct a detailed personal development plan:
Developing a plan;
Monitoring a personal development plan.

4. Understand the principles of research design and evaluate a range of research
methods:
The role of research in supporting management decisions;
Research philosophy and strategies;
Research design and design criteria;
Qualitative and quantitative techniques;
Sampling and validity.

At the conclusion of this module you should be able to:

1. Critically reflect on professional and personal development.

Learning and teaching methods

Learning and teaching will take the shape of either classroom based or online lectures and seminars where Wivenhoe House will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate practice. Self-managed learning will supplement seminars where you will be provided with guidance on required reading and on-line learning resources.
