Module description

You will analyse the strategic implications of managing within dynamic industry environments and evaluate the necessary theories, tools and skills needed to develop realistic, coherent and effective business strategy. You will analyse the nature of change and change management strategies within the industry with consideration for innovation. You will evaluate the important role technology is playing in regards to strategy, change and innovation within the industry.

Module aims

This module aims to enable you to:
1. Critically evaluate business assessment models and concepts in auditing the external environment.
- Develop an understanding of; the strategic management process and strategies and the macro-environment;
- Porter’s Five Forces Model as an analytical tool;
- Strategy, tactics and operations eg. Corporate growth strategies, Cost advantage and differentiation strategies, Value chain analysis and competitor analysis, Best value strategy;
- Competitor analysis.

2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of strategic vision and missions for directing event and hospitality organisations.
- Developing a strategic vision; the process and implications;
- Mission, vision statements and core values within the industry.

3. Critically analyse change management strategies within the contemporary event and hospitality industry.
- Stages of adoption of innovation;
- Concept of organisational development – transformation, creativity and innovation and competitive advantage; learning organisations;
- Strategic implications of and forces driving organisational change;
- Barriers and resistance to change;
- The nature of organisation change;
- Imperatives and impetus for change;
- Change management techniques and outcomes.

4. Critically assess the role of technology within the contemporary event and hospitality industry.
- Role of technology systems, design and products that is influencing the contemporary hotel and hospitality industry eg. PMS, technology for the accommodation product/service and the Food & Beverage product/service.

Module learning outcomes

At the conclusion of this module you should be able to:
1. Critically evaluate business assessment models and concepts in auditing the external environment.
2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of strategic vision and missions for directing event and hospitality organisations.
3. Critically analyse change management strategies within the contemporary event and hospitality industry .
4. Critically assess the role of technology within the contemporary event and hospitality industry.

Learning and teaching methods

Learning and teaching will take the shape of lectures followed by group seminars where Wivenhoe House will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate practice. Self managed learning will supplement seminars where you will be provided with guidance on required reading and on-line learning resources.
