Key module for

MFA W41220 Acting (International),
MFA W41020 Acting

Module description

Year Two MFA Acting students may opt to engage in an intensive study of one character from a play or novel in English (or in English translation), researching a range of approaches to and interpretations of the character in performance.

This forms the basis for the creation of an original monologue based on and inspired by the character in the source text. Assessment is through a research portfolio with a contextualising document (not more than 5,000 words) and the creation and performance of an original monologue (5-7 minutes long) created by the student for that character

PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION
At the end of term three MA/MFA Acting (International) students will collaborate with actors and directors from the MA Acting course on a full-length production in which they are directed as professionals rather than tutored. By the completion of the theatre production, students will be expected to have attained a degree of professionalism, which will fully equip them for the highly competitive career of acting. MFA students will have three showcase productions in their second year, two of which are usually in London venues. Students will also have seminars and workshops with Industry professionals on audition and interview technique, CVs, improving presentation and preparation for employment in the industry.

Module aims

The module aims:
1. To allow the student to initiate and pursue a substantial independent project
2. To enable the student to reflect critically and creatively on a range of skills and knowledge appropriate to the training and preparation of the actor

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module students will be able to demonstrate:
1. The ability to plan and complete a substantial independent project, with limited tutorial guidance
2. A detailed and critical understanding of the chosen material, including its original cultural and intellectual context, and the responses of theorists and practitioners to it
3. Comprehensiveness and discrimination in the gathering, editing and presentation of research materials
4. Clarity in the communication of the results of research and critical inquiry
