This MA/MFA Acting (International) module uses a research based Naturalistic approach to acting as its base.
In term one, students study a practical Stanislavski based approach to acting and character creation. In term two, building on the work in the first term, student will study a range of texts will includes research into their cultural context, the writer's life and works, themes of the plays and the critical reception of the plays in production.
Scene work is undertaken on scripts by, for example, Chekhov, Ibsen, Strindberg, Williams, Miller, Rattigan and other Naturalistic and Realist texts. The module extends and applies Naturalistic/Realist acting techniques and includes development of the specific vocal and physical skills associated with them. The module also includes a study of the theories and assumptions underlying Realism.
The aims of the module are:
1. To enable students to study one of the most important and distinctive artistic forms of the last 150 years, in its theatrical application and in its wider aesthetic context
2. To allow students to develop their vocal and movement skills in response to the specific challenges of the Realist theatre aesthetic
3. To provide students with a knowledge of major roles from the late 19th-century and 20th Century Realist/Naturalistic canon
4. To provide students with further experience of acting in English with fluency and clarity
Students will be able to demonstrate:
1. An understanding of the key features of the Realist theatrical artefact in its artistic context
2. The ability to create and perform a substantial role within scenes from a Realist text.
3. An understanding of, and ability to apply, appropriate vocal and physical techniques to the creation and performance of a Realist character
4. An ability to reflect critically on his or her own process and achievement in preparing for performance and performing
5. Fluency and clarity in spoken English in performance, appropriate to the student’s background and to the specific role
