BA W496 Acting and Community Theatre
This is the summative project for the BA Hons Acting and Community Theatre final year. In small companies students will identify a community setting in which to develop a theatrical intervention. This could take the form of a community play, a participatory project, or promenade performance. The students will work with at least one group of participants to develop the project. Each company of students will work as production crew and FOH for another company.
Students will align the artistic and practical needs of the project and the community they work with. They will ensure that the performance conforms to licensing and other regulatory requirements. They will consider issues of accessibility and interpretation for audiences. Posters, programmes, and publicity for the project will be produced. Through regular company meetings they will assign roles to manage publicity, production processes and documentation of performances.
During the work of this module students will critically examine the role of the artist, management and arts administration in community theatre. They will reflect on their own artistic development and readiness for high level participation in the development of community arts provision.
In planning the performance piece for a community setting students will:
- Research and investigate an appropriate setting
- Use specialist performance skills to develop a project
- Work within and across disciplines, skills and techniques
- Allocate and take responsibility for a range of roles within the process
- Create a suitable planning framework and schedule for the project
- Address issues of access and equal opportunities
- to work independently as a small company undertaking multiple roles
- to engage community group/s in workshops and performance
- to plan, manage and perform in a community theatre project
- to document the process of research, development and product
Students will be able to demonstrate ability to:
- plan and develop a community theatre project
- execute multiple roles within the production process
- apply performance and/or facilitation skills and techniques at a professional level
- liaise effectively with community participants
Students will present, as a small group, an outline proposal for a community theatre project involving at least one group of participants. Various aspects will then be further developed under tutorial guidance with each student in a specific role such as location manager, community liaison or writer. Research and development of the project will be documented in an on-going portfolio.
As the production plan develops, students will have a production role in addition to their creative/ performance role in developing the project. Companies will determine the specialist and skills support necessary for professional realisation of their project.
Execution of the project will begin through rehearsal and/or workshops with participants in conjunction with implementation of the production plan developed in term two in arts management. An evaluative process will be developed and implemented. Student companies will provide technical support as required for fellow student companies.
