Module description

In this module you will research, devise, write and stage a project based on a contemporary issue. You will learn to use theatre to express their ideas and emotional engagement with the chosen issue and further develop the skills of communicating with your audience.

By the end of the module you will have produced a piece of theatre that expresses and articulates your own original views and ideas. The style and form of the work produced will express your own individual creative inclination. Some of the work will have tested the boundaries of existing contemporary theatre practice

Learning and teaching methods

Students work with tutors in small group classes, workshops and rehearsals Learning also takes place in feedback and group discussion on performances Independent study and research Oral formative assessment and tutor feedback is given in group session Students receive written summative assessment and tutor comments at the end of term.

Additional coursework information

The assessment criteria for this module are the extent to which students can demonstrate advanced understanding of the module Learning Outcomes. Projects are staged in a four-night run of performances at the end of Term Two. Performances will normally take place in an external theatre venue and are observed by the tutor team and project directors for assessment. A performance is video-recorded for assessment and feedback.

Exam format definitions

  • Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
