Key module for

BA W412 Acting and Stage Combat

Module description

Term One, Two and Three - Theatre History and Research Methodology
This unit is designed to present students with an overview of theatre history; you will examine the roots and traditions of British theatre history and consider the effects of key European influences on the development to Theatre and Drama in this nation. The module will explore questions, such as of "what is a play?" and "what is theatre?"; it is designed to introduce forms of theatre not frequently recognised in today's practice. This course will pave the way for further critical analysis of theatrical performances.

Terms One, Two and Three - Anatomy and Physiology
In this year-long unit you will study the human body - developing understanding of how it can be nurtured and destroyed. You will learn efficient ways to look after your own health, as well as the health and safety of others. The course will also build performance skills- you will gain knowledge of how certain injuries affect the functions of the human body so that you can recreate such effects in a performance situation. In Term One you will be introduced to the structure and systems of the human body. You will be able to apply your knowledge and understanding of the body in your physical training to develop a personal training programme. You will be required to relate your understanding to health & safety strategy.

Terms One, Two and Three - Health and Safety

This unit is predominantly taught through tutorials and feedback on written assignments. You will receive lectures to introduce the current legislation requirements, practices and accepted style of risk assessments and forms of evaluation that could be expected of you in the profession. In Year One the written work you produce will combine the practices that are developing in other contextual units. You will be encouraged to develop the faculty of risk anticipation and evaluation and to determine countermeasures and controls to enhance safety. Another strand of this course is the care of weapons, as poorly looked-after stage weapons can quickly become a hazard to performers. In addition to this line of study, you will receive training towards a First Aid Certificate.
