Key module for

BA W412 Acting and Stage Combat

Module description

Terms One and Two - Unarmed Stage Combat
This unit will introduce you to unarmed stage combat and during the course you will look at the moves and techniques that appear in both the BASSC and BADC syllabi.

Terms One and Two - Rapier and Dagger
This unit will introduce you to your first bladed weapons. Rapier and Dagger is one of the most commonly called for weapons system in stage work - most likely because it was the Elizabethan / Jacobean choice of weapon. It is also a two weapon system which encourages a balance of body muscle use and helps develop the performers overall fitness.

Term Two - Single Sword
This unit will introduce you to single swordplay. Single-sword work falls somewhere between a preparation for Smallsword (which is taught in Year 2) and Hollywood Swashbuckling. The unit will focus on learning how to act a fight scene safely and effectively using this weapon in a different yet complimentary style to Rapier & Dagger.

Term Three - Quarterstaff
This unit will introduce you to stage combat with Staves. It is one of two units in which you use an individual, double-handed weapon. The unit contributes to preparing students for a BASSC actor/combatant certificate and a BADC Level 3 proficiency. In addition to drawing on previous technical knowledge, it will require you to learn new styles of footwork and weapon handling specific to the staff. The staff work that we will do draws from both Western and Eastern influences.

Term 3 - 2-Handed Broadsword (Mediaeval Sword)
This unit will introduce you to stage combat with the Broadsword and is the second of the two units in which you will use an individual double-handed weapon.
