Module description

This module focuses on students developing a general understanding of two major factors of the technical process in creating theatre: sound and lighting.


Students will develop both theoretical understanding and the practical skills to support different types of performances. There will also be an emphasis on how the elements of sound and light can be manipulated for filmed projects.

Module aims

The aims fo this module are:



  • To equip students with the basic skills of a theatre lighting operator

  • To equip students with the basic skills of a theatre sound operator

  • To develop students’ knowledge of the core principles of professional lighting and sound design

  • To provide practical experience of technical theatre through hands-on learning

Module learning outcomes

Students will develop:



  1. Understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the lighting and sound departments;

  2. Understanding of the principles of lighting and sound within the production processes;

  3. Understand of the principles of lighting and sound operation within a performance;

  4. Ability to work within a production team and to work to deadlines and schedules;

  5. Understanding of lighting and sound equipment, desks, and computer software;

  6. Awareness of Health and Safety procedures.

Module information

This module will cover:



  • How to read and interpret lighting plans in a variety of different formats;

  • Computer literacy with lighting and sound software;

  • Creating and using lighting & sound plots

  • Script Analysis

  • Fault find and problem solve equipment, and develop maintenance skills

  • Health & Safety

Learning and teaching methods

These lessons will be practical sessions taking place in computer labs and theatre spaces.

Students will meet with a tutor for an average of 2-3 hours a week across all three terms for the first six or seven weeks of term.

During the second half of each term, students will have the opportunity to observe rehearsals and to gain an insight into the professional process of designing, managing and running lighting and sound in the theatre.
