Module description

In this module students will explore the various duties of the stage management team and the different roles they adopt at all stages of preparing for and putting on a production. Students will learn and practice how to examine scripts in advance of rehearsals and learn how a technical rehearsal works prior to the opening of a show. Through this module they will work independently as well as learning key skills for leading and supporting a team.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To equip students with the basic skills of a stage manager

  • To develop students’ knowledge of the role of the stage manager within the context of a theatre production

  • To provide practical experience of stage management through hands-on learning

  • To build student confidence in managing events

  • To develop students’ understanding and experience of strategies for effective group work.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will:


Have an understanding of:



  1. The terminology used in the rehearsal room and production

  2. The various roles within a stage management team

  3. The customary process in preparing to open a production in a theatre

  4. Health and Safety requirements in the theatre


Development of:



  1. The core skills and concepts necessary to manage a theatrical space and performers

  2. Ability to respond imaginatively to the demands of a stage manager

  3. IT skills that will help to support performances and technical rehearsals

  4. Ability to create a cue sheet and the knowledge of how to cue a performance

Syllabus



  • The relationship between the stage manager and the other production departments.

  • The roles of the Stage Manager, Deputy Stage Manager, and Assistant Stage Manager during preproduction, rehearsal and performance.

  • Use of the prompt script and notations for recording blocking.

  • Awareness of Health and Safety procedures.

  • Best practice for managing a team.

  • Cueing and calling a performance.

Learning and teaching methods

Stage Management will be taught through whole group seminars, workshops, and independent study tasks. Students will undertake both classroom-based learning and practical groupwork.
