Module description

Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of good voice production and begin to acquire a sense of rhythm and aural awareness. You will be introduced to developing personal warm-ups and will develop the technical skills to progress to an increasingly demanding range of repertoire and emotional situations. By the end of the module you will have acquired knowledge of vocal technique and an ability to begin the control of nerves in performance. You will have begun to understand the individual characteristics of your own voice and the appropriate care needed to maintain it. You will also have a basic working knowledge of music theory.

Term One
1. Posture, breath, onset of tone
2. Basic score-reading
3. Ensemble singing disciplines
4. Repertoire- building via the development of the Musical in its early years
5. Fundamentals of intercostals, diaphragmatic breathing
6. Good posture and relaxation
7. Correct use of onset, simultaneous with the breath
8. Identification of constricted sound and poor use of breath
9. Awareness of resonators
10. Functions of the jaw, lips and tongue in singing
11. Basic principles of the correct reproduction of pitch and rhythm
12. Recognising the 'geography' of a song: repeats, note length and musical instructions.

Term Two
13. Application of technical skills to more demanding range of repertoires
14. Group awareness of small ensemble work
15. Continued influence of the Musical on repertoire
16. Music of set periods and styles related to the term's acting projects
17. The function of balance of relaxation and energy in singing
18. Developing abdominal support and anchoring
19. Understanding resonance and placement, smooth blend of the passaggi.
20. Performance of group-devised song in folk-song style
21. Beginning solo singing

Term Three
22. Part-singing
23. Ensemble work with dance routines
24. Solo singing in large performance spaces
25. Emotional range – demonstrating character through song
26. Precision of vowels and consonants
27. Understanding the dynamic structure of the solo song
28. Correct posture for stationary singing
29. Impact of choreography on the voice – and how to manage it
30. History of the Musical

Module aims

To encourage students to:
- Identify and critically analyse various singing styles and techniques
- Begin to appreciate the role of music as an entity in theatrical performance
- Understand the connection to be made between singing, music, movement, voice and acting in approaching song performance
- Understand the stylistic context in which they are working
- Develop the ability to make objective criticism of vocal performance
- Understand basic music theory.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module you will be able to demonstrate:

Technical
- Breathing (correct use of techniques)
- Rhythm (feeling the pulse of the music)
- Resonance and placement (intonation, free and unconstricted tone)
- Physicality (posture, alignment, release)
- Articulation (energized text, use of vowels and consonants)

Sung Material
- Ensemble and small group singing
- Solo song (demonstration of journey through song/communication)
- Application of technical skills to support character through song
- Development (ownership of voice, working though inhibition)
Learning and Teaching Methods
- Students work with music and singing tutors in group practical classes
- Normally 4 hours of music/singing classes per week except during acting priority weeks
- Students will be expected to practice music and singing in independent study
- Screening of selected musical shows will support students’ learning on this module
- Formative verbal assessment and feedback from tutors at the end of Terms One and Two
- Written report with summative assessment and tutor’s comments at the end of Term Three
