BA W496 Acting and Community Theatre

Module description

Actors spend their entire careers speaking words of others and trying to imagine how other people think. Contextual Studies is intended to help students to observe, to make rational sense of their observations and to put their own ideas into their own words as part of seminar discussion and in writing. The arts administration module introduces students to the principles of community theatre and the theoretical underpinnings of theatre work in the community.

- Introduction to learning resources
- Introduction to Personal Development Journal
- Theatre history from its earliest forms of Ritual and Medieval, Greek and Roman.
- Critical examination and discussion of a range of early theatrical texts e.g. mystery and morality plays
- Introduction to Culture, Identity, Community and Society

Term Two
- The structures and conventions of essay-writing
- Reading, researching and referencing
- Theatre history from the Elizabethan period to 1958
- Reading and analysing texts – e.g. early Elizabethan texts, Ibsen, Brecht
- Connecting to the life and times from which scripts have arisen.
- Structures and conventions of plays and theatre in different periods
- Parallel development of visual and performing art movements
- models of Community and Community Theatre
- Post-naturalism

Term Three
- Contemporary theatre history
- Play texts of the post 1958 period
- Exploring dramatic structure
- Researching the social context from which plays have arisen
- The role of participatory theatre in society

Module aims

To encourage students to:
- Develop an understanding of theatre history and of how theatre reflects its times
- Understand texts of community theatre and theatre in the society
- Express themselves objectively in oral and written form
- See, read and discuss plays
- Formulate objective criticism of theatre and cultural policy.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module you will be able to:
- prepare a creative scene presentation to an original story or assignment brief
- work as part of an ensemble/ team-work
- present a structured argument and express ideas in class and in writing
- demonstrate critical evaluation orally and in written form
- use appropriate research effectively to prepare written and practical assignments.

- Lecture/seminar - Independent study for research, class preparation and for producing/preparing assignments. - Presentations and attending performances for review - Feedback from peers and tutors on a series of short formative essays which will include comment on argument, assertion, opinion, research and bibliography.
