Module description

This acting module takes place during the first term of the programme. The module aims to encourage you to explore imaginatively various means of communication. It teaches students the roots of theatre and its functions of story-telling and celebration. The work of this first term module is designed to stretch your emotional, physical and vocal range and to encourage spontaneity through improvisation.

The module culminates in an assessed studio-based 'showing' to a small invited audience of staff and students at the end of term.

Ritual and Story-Telling
You will learn to communicate directly and effectively with an audience through a story.

Freeing the Emotions
The work of this section encourages you to develop and show a range of basic emotions truthfully and without inhibition.

Freeing the Imagination
You will learn how to communicate stories and characters imaginatively and freely using voice, body and emotion.

Acting from a basis of truth
You will explore the creation of characters that are larger than life yet rooted in real human emotions.

Creating Atmospheres
Students will work in groups creating atmospheres that capture the mood and spirit of a written text (eg a poem, play or story).

Introduction to Ensemble Work
Through their group work students will begin the work of learning to participate effectively as part of an ensemble.

Learning and teaching methods

Students work with tutors in small group practical classes. Learning also takes place in practical presentations/demonstrations, workshops and supervised rehearsals. Continuous oral tutor feedback is integral to class work. Students receive written formative assessment and tutor feedback report at the end of term. Additional learning is encouraged through improvisation, group discussion and tutor-guided independent study.
