Module description

This module introduces the TCP/IP layered stack of internetworking protocols, with particular focus on Ethernet switching at the network access layer and IP subnetting at the network layer. Addressing structures will be designed for campus scale networks, and evaluated for a modern infrastructure. Laboratory sessions will give extensive experience working with and configuring network devices.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To introduce students to TCP/IP networks.

  • To develop students knowledge of principles of Ethernet switching.

  • To develop students knowledge of principles of IP addressing systems.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Explain the principles of the TCP/IP model.

  2. Configure network devices with appropriate settings.

  3. Explain the principles of, and configure, Ethernet switches.

  4. Design IP subnet addressing schemes, suitable for campus-scale networks.

  5. Assess the suitability of relevant LAN protocols within modern communications infrastructure.
