Module description

This module is part of the continuing programme of skills-focussed modules that provides you with the opportunity to develop some of the skills you need as a Sport and Exercise Scientist and ensure you can compete successfully in the job market. In the Sports Science summer school you will apply some of the basic science and research skills that you acquired in lectures and practical classes during the first year to the identification and investigation of research questions relevant to performance in a variety of sports. You will also have an opportunity to develop your group working and communications skills whilst indulging in the simple enjoyment of participating in novel sporting experiences! In the statistics and data analysis part of the module you will practice and extend your skills in processing, evaluating and analyzing data, basic tools of the Sports Scientist's trade. Finally, this module will provide you with a structured opportunity to think about your future, about how the academic, sporting and social experiences of your University life are contributing to your development as an individual and what you need to do to fulfil your hopes and potential.

Learning outcomes:
To pass this module students will need to be able to:
1. participate in a research project to prepare you for your third year research dissertation;
2. apply a variety of standard statistical methodologies to the evaluation and analysis of typical data in the sport and exercise sciences;
3. demonstrate an understanding of the meaning of data presented in a variety of formats;
4. demonstrate an understanding of the job application process and preparation of curriculum vitae's and accompanying documents;
5. develop a written strategy to optimise your emloyability;
6. update your personal development and skills e-portfolio;
7. reflect upon the learning experiences of life at University and plan your development for the future.

Sports Science Summer School. 5 days; 9.00-5.00 each day comprising 4 x 3h practical Sport sessions; 3h lectures/seminars; 3-4 x 3h research project sessions; 1-2 x 3h presentation preparation. 1x3 h oral presentation session. 57 h student directed learning.

Careers and Personal Development Planning. 1 x 2 hrs and 1 x 3 hrs careers workshops; 1 x 3 hrs careers conference; 2 x 1 hr group tutorials; 2 x 10 min individual tutorials; 12 hrs student directed learning.

Statistics and data analysis. 5 x 2 hrs statistics workshops; 1 x 2 hrs data analysis seminar; 1 x 2 hr and 1 x 1 hr workshop on scientific report writing (SPF); 1 x 2 hrs presentation skills; 1 x 2 hrs critiquing research papers; 20 h student directed learning.

Participation: At least 6 hrs research participation.
