Module description

We will discover the diversity of animal forms and functions and the role of natural selection in determining individual behaviour such as foraging, breeding and predator escape. We will explore how variation in the behaviour of interacting individuals leads to population level ecological dynamics. Every population scale interaction that we witness in nature, competition between native and invasive species or responses of mobile insects to climate change for example, is underpinned by evolution of behaviour (e.g. timing of migration) and physiology (e.g. investment in growth vs reproduction). It is this realisation, that nothing in ecology and evolution makes sense except in light of each other, which forms the "newest synthesis" that we shall explore together in this module.

7. Knowledge of applied animal population ecology case studies;
8. Skills in collecting, presenting analysing and interpreting biological data.

Exam Assessment: End of module MCQ Exam and 1 hour exam paper in Summer Term; both equally weighted

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures: 24 x 1 hr; revision 2 x 1 hr including 1 on directed learning material plus 1 revision class before MCQ and 1 revision class before summer exam; Practicals: 4 x 3-4 hrs. Please see Module documentation on Moodle for further details.
