Module description

This module contributes to enhancing students' overall learning experience and performance. It forms part of the School's objective of developing students as active learners with the reflective ability to form holistic views on business and to benefit from research-led teaching.

The module is systematically linked to the Induction programme and the requirements of the first year modules. As the module is compulsory for all EBS first year students, the aim is that the skills learned will benefit student learning and performance in all other modules as well.

Module aims

This module aims to support students in the transition to university. It contributes to students’ understanding of the requirements of academic study and aims to support students in developing the necessary skills to successfully undertake university studies.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Develop their knowledge and understanding of the importance of search engines and library resources for independent research and as an integral part of being an active learner.
2. Develop their knowledge and understanding of the nature and scope of referencing and its importance in developing professional skills.
3. Develop their knowledge and understanding of academic offences and their consequences.

Skills for Your Professional Life (Transferable Skills)

The module aims to develop a variety of personal transferable skills by encouraging students to:

1. Identify and distil key features and arguments covered in texts and presentations.
2. Develop coherent and well-structured lines of argument supported by relevant analysis and concepts.
3. Become better equipped to discriminate between relevant and irrelevant information for the purposes of decision-making.
4. Become better equipped to apply analytical skills and a critical judgement to handle business problems.
5. Develop the ethical awareness required in being professional.
6. Communicate effectively in writing and presentations.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered through a combination of live lectures early in the autumn and the beginning of the spring term and a series of pre-recorded lectures for students to work through in their own time during the autumn term so that they are well prepared before they need to submit their coursework for BE901 and for their main modules. The spring term lecture helps students make effective use of feedback from autumn modules and apply this to their work in the spring term. The topics will be delivered as one hour lectures in week 2 and week 18 and seven pre-recorded lectures which can be accessed via the module Moodle page, with supporting forms of assessment. There will also be four voluntary support classes for this module which will allow students to get more focused support with developing key academic skills covered in the module and applicable to all their other modules. The voluntary support classes will appear on your timetable. In academic year 2021-2022 the delivery is likely to involve online learning.
