Module description

Leadership is an important topic in the domain of business and management studies both from a theoretical and a practical perspective. The overarching objective of this module is to introduce students to leadership issues and debates, to build their awareness of leadership theories, concepts, and practices, and to support their ability to contribute to, talk about, and develop leadership capacity in organisations.

The module introduces students to a range of concepts, models, theories, and topics within leadership and highlights important concerns in leadership studies. The module will cover traditional approaches to leadership, current issues in leadership and critical issues in leadership from a theoretical and a practical perspective. At the end of the module students will have developed an analytical appreciation of leadership, and the problems and challenges leaders face, within modern organisations.

Module aims

The main aims of the module are:

1. To provide students with an understanding of contemporary leadership issues, concepts, models, and theories.

2. To familiarise students with the practice of leadership

3. To enable students to reflect on, analyse, contribute to, and critique leadership in organisations

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate clear understanding of the elements of the various theories and concepts on leadership in organisations

2. Compare, contrast, and evaluate leadership practice, using critical reflection

3. Independently, analyse both leaders and leadership strategies in organisations.

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

1. Evaluate leadership issues from a range of perspectives and be able to integrate these into a considered and practical approach to leadership, management, and organisation
2. Think critically about leadership by discussing current case studies and academic articles
3. Develop your commercial awareness based on studying examples of current leadership practices
4. Reflect on your attitudes to leadership, e.g. based on your personal leadership learning log
5. Work effectively and efficiently in small teams (in classes)
6. Solve problems creatively and collaboratively
7. Reflect on your own future leadership practice

Learning and teaching methods

The Level 5 BE420 module is delivered over an entire term. The module will have two-hour lectures (weeks 16, 18, 20, 22, 24) and two-hour seminars (weeks 17, 19, 23, 25). Week 21 is a reading week, with no lectures or seminars. During lectures and seminars, we expect active participation from students, to create an engaging, inclusive, positive learning experience for everyone. Preparation for lectures and seminars is key, involving textbook chapter reading, and reviewing resources available in Moodle beforehand. In academic year 2022-2023 delivery may be adjusted in line with University Covid responses and online learning.
