Module description

This module emphasizes that understanding of different cultures is of critical importance to the current globalized economy and especially to the tourism industry, given its multinational and multicultural characteristics.


By equipping students with communication and intercultural skills, this module further provides them with insights on how to effectively manage diverse cultures in an ever-changing and highly competitive global work reality.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To develop students' cultural self-awareness, while building on theories of culture.

  • To prepare and nurture students' confidence within the perspective of managing across national boundaries in a highly interconnected world.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Have critical understanding of the key determinants of intercultural awareness and of the close relationship between culture and communication.

  2. Understand systems universal to all cultural groups and their relationship to communicating and negotiating in a globalised reality.

  3. Have a critical awareness of cultural shocks and the impact values have in communicating effectively with people from other cultures.

  4. Have a critical awareness of ethical issues in the development of intercultural competence to prevent the emergence of bias hampering the growth of mutual understanding.

This module will be delivered via:

  • Lectures from departmental staff and guest speakers, together with a combination of;
  • Seminars; discussion of case studies; discussion of journal articles; class exercises; individual and group work; signposting to additional resources.
