Module description

Management accounting can be seen as a way of providing information to managers in three main areas: costing, decision-making, and planning & control. The emphasis of this module will mainly be on the first area (i.e., information for costing); even though the other two areas will also be covered in the module. Cost allocation, absorption vs variable costing, and job costing are examples of the first area. Cost-volume-profit analysis and relevant costs are example of second area i.e. decision-making. The module will also touch upon profit planning and budgeting, which falls under the third major area covered under management accounting i.e. planning & control.
This module will develop students' basic knowledge of management accounting
and sensitize them about the context in which it operates. Students will learn concepts, techniques and tools, which will help them in becoming good managers, once they enter the 'real world'. These concepts and techniques will be considered mainly in the context of manufacturing organisations, yet they are also relevant to the service and not-for-profit sectors.
The module is complete and self-contained and acts as a foundation to progress to other second and third year modules in management accounting.
