Your final assessed coursework will consist of two interconnected parts: i) a research journal; and, ii) a portfolio of project proposals. Beginning in the Autumn Term, and continuing throughout the year, you will be researching a coherent body of notes, writing, images, reviews, etc. that will document the development and focussing of the ideas, topics and issues central to your practice as a curator.
These ideas, topics, and issues will form the core of the content of your proposals for curatorial projects, which will be written up in the portfolio you submit at the end of the Summer Break.
The aims of this module are:
- To provide students with the opportunity to undertake a significant project involving in-depth investigation at an advanced level of an area or of issue of relevance to an employer.
- To provide students with the opportunity to apply and develop advanced level research skills at master's level.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Have a critical appreciation of how advanced research skills can be applied to a specific issue or area addressed by an exhibition.
- Be able to produce a significant and substantial piece of work demonstrating critical analysis of a defined issue and how to explore it within the context of an exhibition.
- Identify, interpret and integrate information from a range of art historical sources, as well as sources from other disciplines, if appropriate.
- Critically evaluate concepts and models from scholarship about art history or other forms of visual culture.
- Select, reflect upon, justify and use appropriate methodologies and practical strategies.

Students will conduct independent research in consultation with their supervisor. Students will also receive feedback from other staff members or students during presentations of their work in progress.
