This module will provide students with an opportunity to relate and integrate theory and practice in the context of everyday working realities. This will happen physically or virtually, depending on the covid-19 safety guidance. It will enable students to examine the various perspectives, themes, theories and processes presented in the other modules as they appear in applied form in an actual work setting (at a Field Placement Agency). It will offer them an opportunity to be supervised by experienced practitioners (Approved Field Placement Supervisors – FPS). To reflect on their placement experience students are given group supervision each week at the Tavistock Centre facilitated by David Amias and Nsimire Bisimwa.

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the connections between the theory and practice of Refugee Care
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the practice issues involved in a specific work setting (e.g. clinical, therapeutic, social care, legal)
3. Develop relevant skills in their chosen field of applied Refugee Care

Demonstrate an understanding of what a “therapeutic dimension” is and what it looks like in practice; using a psychosocial approach to understanding the experience of asylum seeking and refugee people, the interactions between them and the work setting, as well as the personal responses of the students themselves.
Essentially, students are expected to spend a period of time, physically or virtually depending on the covid-19 safety guidance, in a specialist setting where work with asylum seeking people/refugees is undertaken. They are required to have direct contact with asylum seeking people/refugees, physically or virtually, in an agreed role and this activity will be supervised by a local practitioner who will act as the Field Placement Supervisor.
