This module will advance students` understanding of the psychology of sport and exercise. The content of the lectures builds upon the knowledge gained in the first year module by exploring in more depth the theoretical explanations of psychological phenomena in sport and performance contexts.
It explores a diverse literature which includes issues about psychological skills, research methodology, and social and cognitive factors related to performance and wellbeing. The learning outcomes listed below represent the minimum that is expected of a second year student of sport and exercise psychology; it is the intention of the staff working on this module to stimulate the development of more advanced student learning skills.
The aims of this module are:
- To develop a critical understanding of specific sport psychology concepts and theories.
- To gain confidence in identifying factors that may affect performance and well-being, develop your knowledge of relevant psychological literature, and enhance your ability to design evidence-based psychological interventions.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Describe key theoretical models in sport psychology.
- Describe how theoretical knowledge can be used in applied sport psychology.
- Evaluate the impact of psychological skills on sports performance.
- Demonstrate competence in data analysis and producing a scientific research report.
- Demonstrate competence in the retrieval, analysis and interpretation of published information.
Students on this module are encouraged to investigate and consider joining the key agencies listed below, together with participating in their conferences, courses, workshops and special interest groups relating to sport and performance psychology.

This module will be delivered via:
- 9 x 1 hour lectures
- 3 x 2 hour practicals, which links to coursework
- 2 x 2 hour computer lab, which links to coursework
- 1 x 2 hour voluntary support class
- 1 x 2 hour assessment prep class
