MSC N2B912 Leadership in Health and Care
The aim of the module is to provide students with theoretical and practical concepts of leadership. Students apply these concepts in practice in a case study related to their own context of practice.
Changes within health and social care delivery are impacting upon professional working practice; staff are increasingly required to respond to demands to deliver improved care, to have greater engagement with patients, service users and their local communities, to facilitate and enhance clinical practice development and to lead or manage with a distributed model rather than traditional teams.
The aims of the Module are:
- to provide students with the theoretical and practical concepts of leadership as applied to practice, in order to support the health and social care organisations in meeting the needs of patients and service users.
- The Module is designed to develop a reflective self-profile and practical skill set to enable participants to develop in leadership roles in future.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate a systematic understanding of key concepts of leadership by critically analysing how these have been applied to review, consolidate, extend and apply their knowledge and understanding in the current context
- Prepare and evaluate a leadership case study within their setting, providing exploration of the rationale for the approach taken
- Analyse communication strategies to support the leadership and development of services
Changes within health and social care delivery are impacting upon professional working practice in a variety of ways; staff are increasingly required to respond to deliver improved care, to have greater engagement with patients, service users and their local communities, to facilitate and enhance clinical practice development and to lead or manage with a distributed model rather than traditional teams. Models of leadership and management in health and social care are evolving to address these changes.
Participants undertake workshops plus self-directed learning in order to engage with and explore models of leadership, service change, to develop insights and to create their own profile of skills, strengths and development needs and to undertake a leadership case study.
Participants are encouraged to critically consider current policy drivers around change and leadership with health and social care, research evidence and reflections on personal observations of leadership issues in health and social care to understand opportunities and barriers for demonstrating leadership.
