This module will enable the apprentice to investigate and explore the structures, processes and outcomes associated with the provision of person-centre care. Emphasis on values; engaging patients and carers; principles of social justice, advocacy, health beliefs, including consideration of culture and religion; shared decision making; establishing therapeutic partnerships and concordance; healthcare systems and complexity; patient safety; human factors and their importance; understanding and learning from errors; managing risk and law and ethics.
This module will introduce you to the importance of seeing people as a whole and enable you to develop a true understanding of person-centred care.
On successful completion of this module, the apprentice should be able to:
- To discuss person-centred care in meeting complex healthcare needs
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the NHS/organisation in the context of patient-centred care
- To explore the different influences on an individual’s engagement with their own care
- To discuss the complexity of shared decision making
- Discuss the national measures introduced to prevent errors and adverse events and near misses
- Be aware of the main legal and ethical principles and apply these to healthcare practice
- Demonstrate understanding of the Knowledge,
- Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) of the Occupational Standard for Apprentices (Essay and Skills portfolio) KSBs: K1-4, K11,12,13,14,15,25,26,27,35,36, S1-4,8,10,11,14,15,28, B1-3
The need to understand how to listen, inform and involve patients in every aspect of their own care is an essential skill for all Health and Social care workers. It is a professional requirement, not only be competent when caring for people with a wide and often divers varieties of illness but to seek out the knowledge required to support both out clinical practice and the patient's wishes.
Overview:
This module utilises a range of teaching and learning methods, so all learning styles are accommodated for, support is provided on a class, group and individual basis. A considerable amount of extension activities are provided within the module to accommodate the wide range of student abilities.
Lectures:
A wide range of electronic media such as PowerPoint, video clips, images and audio will be utilised.
Classroom, Zoom, independent and group work activities.
Apprentice led activities.
Independent:
There are several formative activities used within the module to promote independent learning as well as module material to direct apprentices to key resources.
Placement:
Apprentices are employed in practice for a minimum of 30 hours per week.
Online:
Social media and Virtual Learning Environment utilised.
There are a range of forums, screen casts and interactive learning activities used to support learning.
Tutorials
Personal and group tutorials are available throughout the module, and it is expected that the apprentice meets with the module lead at least once during the module to discuss written work.
It is the apprentice's responsibility to attend group tutorials and to arrange any personal tutorials with the module lead.
Skills:
There are formative activities that are included within the module to assess the acquisition of necessary skills such as essay writing, use of IT, and communication skills.

A 3000-word Case Study / Essay
The assignment for this module will involve a case study of a patient in clinical practice. The apprentice needs to explore person-centred care, exploring possible positive and negative impact on patients and their care. The apprentice must examine a specific incident in their workplace. The issue should be an incident that occurred that was significant enough to prompt the apprentice to question, enquire or examine their practice or the practice of the people around them.
Exam format definitions
- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
