This module provides an understanding of the need for a strategic approach to human resources and workforce planning. You will be supported in analysing concepts such as retention, engagement and performance management as well as succession planning.
This module aims to enable you to:
1. Evaluate the concept of Human Resource management and relevant employment legislation.
- Critically review role of Human Resources Management within the business;
- Recruitment and selection, Employee Relations, Performance Management, Employee Engagement, Talent Management and Succession Planning;
- Learning and Development as an integral function of Human Resources;
- Analyse the role of relevant employment legislation and HR good practice in driving Human Resources Management effectiveness in hospitality operations.
2. Critically evaluate the impact of strategic talent acquisition, performance management and employee relations on hotel and hospitality operations.
- Talent needs analysis and techniques used to attract right candidate. Contemporary issues, recruitment trends and the impact of existing competition on successful talent resourcing;
- Key performance indicators measuring Human Resources effectiveness and alignment with the business strategic objectives within hospitality;
- Critical analysis of relationship between the organisation and its employees. Employee Relations strategy, policy and practice and conflict management.
3. Critically analyse the role of HR strategic tools to manage employee engagement and employee retention within hotel and hospitality operations.
- Analyse employee engagement by identifying areas that complement performance metrics;
- Role of communication between employer brand and its workforce and relationship strategy. Gathering and analysis of valuable data for the purpose of business development and high level of engagement and identification with the brand;
- Evaluate impact of performance and reward systems on the business, department and individual levels within hospitality.
4. Apply strategic concepts of talent development and succession planning to hotel and hospitality operations.
- Strategic planning of internal talent development, compliance with delivery of regulated training and enabling learning culture within hospitality operations. Role of CPD in successful management of talents and recruitment budget in consideration of cost;
- Formulation of a strategic approach to talent development and the role of HR support in retention of talents within the business;
- Critical analysis of contemporary issues within the hospitality industry influencing current trends in talent development and succession planning effectiveness.
At the conclusion of this module you should be able to:
1. Evaluate the concept of Human Resource management and relevant employment legislation.
2. Critically evaluate the impact of strategic talent acquisition, performance management and employee relations on hotel and hospitality operations.
3. Critically analyse the role of HR strategic tools to manage employee engagement, and employee retention, within hotel and hospitality operations.
4. Apply strategic concepts of talent development and succession planning to hotel and hospitality operations.

Learning and teaching will take the shape of either classroom based or online lectures and seminars where Wivenhoe House will be used to contextualize theory and illustrate practice. Self-managed learning will supplement seminars where you will be provided with guidance on required reading and on-line learning resources.
