This is a work-based module. Students will spend a year in an industrial workplace where they will learn directly from qualified industrial scientists. Students are given the opportunity to develop their practical skills across the range of biological, biomedical science and biochemistry disciplines, with the opportunity to gain advanced skills by specialising in a particular discipline.
The aims of this module are:
- To provide an opportunity for students to develop their abilities by working in an industrial or other employment setting under supervision
- To appreciate the opportunities and constraints of such work
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key industrial, professional and/or other workplace processes, responsibilities and directions.
- Develop the intellectual & cognitive skills of undertaking a supervised project in an industrial or other workplace setting.
- Develop appropriate practical skills including ability to use industrial or other workplace methods, techniques, equipment and processes.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Health and Safety, and industrial procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills of satisfactory competence in relevant industrial laboratory/ other workplace activities including those associated with effective teamwork, communication, quality control and quality assurance.

This module will be delivered via:
- A suitable placement over a 9-12 month period which will normally commence in September/October.
- The placement will comprise hands-on learning in the workplace under the supervision of a workplace supervisor and the School Placement Officer.
- You will be expected to complete monthly progress reports and a log book which will be submitted to the Workplace Supervisor and the Placement Officer.
As a placement student, you will be expected to do work that is required by the employer. To achieve this you may be required to follow specific training programmes provided by the workplace to equip you with the necessary skills.
On your return to the School we will also ask you to participate in a presentation session for students on your course.
