This module aims to introduce students to a hospital environment, as well as developing skills in Biomedical Science.
The module will also introduce students to different career paths by inviting external speakers such as vets. An employability day will be organised and several external speakers and Essex students will talk about their professional journey.
The aims of this module are:
- To become familiar with the Pathology Department.
- To become aware of the routine work performed.
- To enhance the students' knowledge of the practical relevance of the Year 2 practicals and lectures.
- To become aware of the journey taken by a sample.
- To become aware of the team work/interdisciplinary work required to release a sample result.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate professional understanding of a range of Biomedical Science topics.
- Show understanding of the four major Pathology biomedical science specialities: Clinical Biochemistry, Cellular Pathology, Medical Microbiology and Haematology/Transfusion Science.
- Show competence in biomedical science-related issues including, health and safety, measurements and reflection and case studies.
- Demonstrate skills in information retrieval, communication, problem solving and team work.
Transferable skills and career planning are increasingly recognised as being of great importance to graduates. Students will develop skills and understanding of assembling CVs and completing application forms. A range of internal and external expert speakers will run workshops and other activities. Students will be enabled to identify the skills required to meet their career goals. Students in this module will have the opportunity to visit hospital departments including Clinical Biochemistry, Cellular Pathology, Medical Microbiology and Haematology/Transfusion Science. They will also have sessions delivered by NHS professionals to introduce them to the main pathology departments and introducing them to some case studies.
This module will be delivered via:
- A series of lectures delivered by internal and visiting lecturers. Moodle quizzes on IBMS and HCPC Standards, coursework including CVs will be used to assess understanding.
