Module description

This module introduces students to a wide range of models, theories and topics within leadership and highlights central debates in the field.


The module will cover traditional approaches to leadership, the differences between management and leadership, current issues in leadership, including leading change, and critical issues in leadership from a theoretical and a practical perspective. At the end of the module students will have developed a critical appreciation of leadership and be able to relate this to their own work context.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To provide students with an understanding and appreciation of a range of theories and perspectives on organisational leadership.

  • To provide students with an understanding of how contextual and other organisational factors influence leadership practices.

  • To develop the ability of students to critically evaluate practices of organisational leadership in a healthcare context.

  • To develop the ability of students to critically reflect on the evolving content of leadership values and practices.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate a clear understanding of the key elements of the various theories and concepts on leadership.

  2. Critically evaluate practices of leadership.

  3. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of organisational leadership.

  4. Apply techniques, models and frameworks to the health care context.

Module information

This module is structured along the themes of both theories and practices of leadership, and provides students with an overview, discussion and analysis of the differences between leadership and management and different styles of leaderships, with the aim to enhance and develop students’ professional and management capabilities.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  1. Three days of block teaching (18 hours, organised by 3-hour am session and 3-hour pm session per day, for a total of 6 x 3-hour sessions)
  2. A total of 4 full days, one per fortnight following the three block teaching days (organised by a 3-hour am session and 3-hour pm session per day)

The module will consist of a variety of learning and teaching methods. Students will be encouraged to engage in reading, writing, participative learning, presentations, case studies, and virtual group-work / interaction.

Teaching delivery will be inclusive, and will:

  • Respect the diversity of students
  • Enable all students to take part in learning and fulfil their potential
  • Ensure different students’ learning needs and preferences are met, regardless of their backgrounds, learning styles or abilities
  • Remove any barriers that prevent students from learning.

An inclusive approach benefits all students because it values their individual strengths and contributions and makes the learning experience richer and more diverse for everyone.
