Module description

This option allows you to devise and create your own practical theatre project, whether solo (on your own) or in a group (two or more people working together). You will be supervised by a member of staff.

You will also write an individual 2,500 word critical reflection in support of your practical piece. Group projects will have a time-tabled slot for their IPTP so that the entire group has a timetabled meeting once a week, but you will also need to work and rehearse outside of this allotted time-tabled session.

As a solo performer, actor or deviser, you will create a one-person piece of performance (no more than 30 minutes in length). You will also write a critical reflection of 2,500 words.

If you are working in a group of 2 or more, your will make a practical piece of theatre; this could be a devised piece, a co-authored piece, the production of a classic play, or of a new piece of writing (no more than 60 minutes in length). Members of the group may take on the following roles: directing, acting, costumes, set and sound design, producing, dramaturgy.

Performances will be held in the Spring term in the Lakeside Theatre (mainstage or Studio) or may, under special circumstances, be staged elsewhere, depending on the needs of the piece.

Module aims

The aims of the module are:

1. to enable students to design their own programme of study, exploring a topic of particular interest to them
2. to empower students to design, execute and deliver an independent practical theatre project
3. to encourage the development of transferable research, planning and organisational skills
4. to prepare students for postgraduate study
5. to develop students' self-motivation, team building, self-discipline and independence in their studies

Module learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the module, students should:

1. be able to show an appreciation of theatre practice from a range of perspectives
2. have a clearer understanding of theatre production processes
3. have developed key skills in respect of directing, acting, costumes, set and sound design, producing and/or dramaturgy
4. have developed a critical awareness of a range of research methodologies
5. be able to work together as a team and to deadlines with a clear output
