This module focuses on developing the skills and knowledge required to effectively work within multidisciplinary teams in applied settings. Students will explore the roles and contributions of various disciplines, such as physiology, biomechanics, and data science, in supporting the performance and health of clients or athletes. In sporting environments, this might involve collaboration between sports scientists, coaches, physiotherapists, and team doctors, while in clinical settings, students will consider how exercise physiologists, nutritionists, and medical professionals work together to optimise health outcomes. Through reflective practice and real-world scenarios, students will gain insights into effective teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, equipping them to thrive in collaborative professional environments.
The aim of this module is:
- To enable students to develop skills in collaboration, communication, and problem-solving to address complex challenges in professional practice.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Critically evaluate the effectiveness of collaborative approaches in addressing performance or health-related challenges.
- Identify and explain the processes required to integrate contributions from various disciplines to achieve optimal outcomes for clients or athletes.
- Apply communication and problem-solving skills to facilitate effective teamwork in multidisciplinary professional environments.
- Reflect on personal and team performance to identify strategies for improving collaboration and achieving professional goals.
- Develop and present evidence-based solutions to case studies or scenarios, demonstrating the ability to synthesise input from multiple disciplines.
This module aims to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and practical experience necessary to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams in applied settings such as sport and clinical environments. Through a combination of lectures, guest speakers, and applied tasks, students will explore the dynamics of collaboration and learn how to integrate contributions from various disciplines to support optimal outcomes for clients or athletes.
Indicative syllabus content
- Principles of effective teamwork and communication in multidisciplinary settings.
- The roles and responsibilities of key professionals in sport and clinical teams (e.g., physiologists, biomechanists, nutritionists, data scientists, coaches, physiotherapists, and medical practitioners).
- Case studies highlighting successful multidisciplinary approaches to performance enhancement and health improvement.
- Strategies for resolving conflict and managing differing perspectives within a team.
- Guest lectures from professionals in sport and clinical settings, sharing their experiences of interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Developing and applying reflective practices to enhance teamwork and professional development.
- Ethical considerations and professional conduct in multidisciplinary environments.
- Tools and techniques for integrating data and expertise across disciplines to develop evidence-based plans.
- Problem-solving frameworks for addressing complex, real-world scenarios in sport and health contexts.
This module will be delivered via:
- 8 x 2-hour lectures
- 4 x 2-hour seminars
- 3 x 2-hour voluntary support classes
Students are expected to undertake the reading before classes and be prepared to engage in discussion.
Students are expected to prepare and deliver a presentation at the end of the module.

- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
