Module description

This module is focussed on the performance analysis practices within applied sport environments. The module will introduce key components of practice, which cover the full process and workflows of performance analysis within different applied sport environments, including: needs analysis and planning, data collection and reliability checking, and facilitation of feedback to different stakeholders in applied sport environments. The module will use a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, guest speakers, practical field-based sessions, and IT-labs to develop knowledge and understanding of these practices, as well developing the necessary skills and underpinning expertise to implement the different practices. The module does not have a sport-specific focus, and instead explores the application of performance analysis within a wide variety of sports, populations, and contexts to develop critical thinkers who can adapt their practices to the needs of the environment they are working within.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:



  • To provide students with a critical understanding of applied performance analysis within different applied sport environments, by exploring key components and processes of applied practice and developing underpinning expertise that facilitates applied performance analysis.

  1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of key components of performance analysis practice within applied sports environments.

  2. Design, deliver and review evidence-based performance analysis practices within applied sport environments, considering the potential applications for different sports, populations, and contexts.

  1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of key components of performance analysis practice within applied sports environments.

  2. Design, deliver and review evidence-based performance analysis practices within applied sport environments, considering the potential applications for different sports, populations, and contexts.

  3. Demonstrate knowledge and mastery of performance analysis software and their applications within applied sport environments.

  4. Demonstrate effective communication skills to create learning opportunities for different stakeholders which develop understanding and improve decision-making within applied sport environments.

  5. Critically evaluate performance analysis practices and underpinning expertise through reflective and problem-solving skills.

Learning and teaching methods

In this module, we will cover the key components of practice of applied performance analysts and explore the underpinning expertise which facilitates these processes.

Syllabus information:

  • Defining the role of the applied performance analyst.
  • Conducting a critical needs analysis for applied performance analysis.
  • Planning, conducting, and assessing reliability, of data collection systems within different sports.
  • Adaptation of applied performance analysis practices for different populations and contexts.
  • Approaches for data analysis of different data generated through performance analysis processes.
  • Translation of data to facilitate feedback to key stakeholders within applied sport environments to inform decision-making and applied practices.
  • Reviewing and evaluating performance analysis practices.
  • Critical reflection on the expertise which underpins applied performance analysis practices.
