Module description

This module provides the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working as a coach or practitioner to develop students underpinning knowledge of key applied practice in strength and conditioning.


This module centres on professional development through mentorship, where students will be supported by professionals working in strength and conditioning to develop specialised skills. The module will shine a light on various aspects of strength and conditioning to better equip students with insider knowledge of various aspects and contexts within sport. Students are encouraged to adopt a reflective approach to develop their expertise and practice.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:



  • To enable students to apply, evaluate and analyse approaches to developing themselves as professionals.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Experience in a work-based environment related to strength and conditioning.

  2. Independently identify opportunities to develop scope of practice.

  3. Critically evaluate evolving scope of practice and preparedness for qualified practice.

  4. Communicate clearly, in a well-structured manner, to synthesise how practice has evolved and critically discuss the impact on future developments.

Module information

Professional Development in Strength and Conditioning requires students to source and complete 60 hours of professional development activities using a variety of resources. This may include supervised placement in a strength and conditioning or related environment (please see Placement Handbook for guidelines), interaction with a mentor to support the development of specialised skills, peer-review of coaching practice, engagement with practitioners working in strength and conditioning to support student development (including engagement with the Masterclass lectures and practical's), and guided tasks. This will allow students the opportunity to develop practical skills unique to the role of the strength and conditioning coach, the opportunity to work within an inter-disciplinary team and understand the role and scope of the strength and conditioning coach's practice. Skills to promote reflective practice will be developed through online seminars with their assigned tutor and university staff member.

  • Emotional intelligence

  • Preparation of self for placement and practice

  • Developing a coaching philosophy

  • Peer feedback and coaching (formative assessment)

  • Reflective practice in coaching

  • Problem-solving complex issues in a strength and conditioning environment

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via a series of lectures that will be delivered online in a pre-recorded format making them easily accessible to students who have varying schedules or life circumstances that impact their ability to access the lectures at time of delivery.

Practical classes will be delivered by University of Essex teaching staff and visiting lectures during the spring onsite period.
