This module examines the clinical application of exercise physiology, focusing on evidence-based practices in a number of key areas, such as cardiac and respiratory physiology, musculoskeletal injuries, pathologies, and common diseases.
This module will dive into screening and diagnostic methods and follow with exercise prescriptions and treatments, providing a comprehensive understanding of the role of a clinical physiologist.
The aim of this module is:
- To provide students with comprehensive knowledge in applying exercise physiology in a clinical setting, focusing on evidence-based practices.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Critically assess physiological principles in health and fitness from a clinical perspective, differentiating both normal and abnormal scenarios and cases.
- Identify key tests, methods, and theories within exercise physiology that can transition into the clinical setting and the underpinning knowledge that allows sport and exercise scientists to work as clinicians.
- Analyse and assess laboratory data to understand specific exercise and non-exercise cases focusing on critical examination and methodological accuracy to synthesise findings.
- Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of clinical practice, showcasing the ability to deal with complex issues effectively, making sound judgments using available data, and communicating findings clearly to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
- Evaluate the effects of exercise tests and interventions on assessing specific conditions with critical insight, considering their effectiveness, safety and ethical implications, and their application in professional practice.

This module will be delivered via:
- Nine 2-hour lectures
- Four 2-hour laboratory practicals
- Four 1-hour laboratory workshops
- One 1-hour support classes
Students are expected to undertake the reading/webinar viewing before classes and be prepared to engage in discussions.

- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
