Module description

This module will introduce students to the underpinning practical skills required for the delivery of Strength and Conditioning services to athletes.


The module will focus on developing students' awareness and understanding of a variety of exercise technical models that will support their ability to improve an athlete's performance. This will include developing students reasoning skills around why elements of performance for each exercise are vital. Students will also gain experience with a wide range of exercise equipment to further their practice as a Strength and Conditioning professional.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To develops students understanding of the technical aspects of the fundamental techniques prescribed in Strength and Conditioning.

  • To develop critical evaluation and reasoning skills to inform discussions of the key elements that comprise an exercise technique and the decision-making process when coaching’.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Critique all components of the technical performance for exercises used to develop reactive strength, linear sprint speed and agility.

  2. Critically evaluate technique for exercises performed in the weight-room and demonstrate scientific reasoning for key elements of an exercises technical model.

  3. Demonstrate the ability to coach a range of exercises related to the development of athletic performance.

Module information

Indicative syllabus:



  • Weightlifting (Snatch, Clean and Jerk)

  • Plyometric training

  • Ballistic training

  • Linear speed training

  • Change of direction and agility training

  • Exercises for the lower limb, upper limb, and trunk

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • Practical sessions during both the Autumn and Spring onsite periods, and online seminars throughout the academic year (6 x 2 hours).
