Work-based learning is a key aspect of student’s development into autonomous practitioners. Students will undertake 200 hours (not exceeding 250 hrs) of supervised clinical placement in a sport and or exercise related environment as a PSRB requirement. At least 50 of these hours will take place in the University's clinic. Additionally, students will complete a two-day Sports Trauma course. Students will be supported in obtaining and undertaking further supervised placement activities outside of the University. On completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate achievement of the Society of Sports Therapists Standards of Proficiency drawing on their learning from the experience undertaking this module and other modules within the course.
The aim of this module is:
To develop your ability to work autonomously, enhance your employability and to ensure that you meet the Society of Sports Therapists’ Standards of Proficiency.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the Sports Therapists role in injury management, treatment and rehabilitation.
- Critically evaluate their evolving practice and management of cases.
- Evidence plans for their future continuing professional development by reflecting critically upon their current, knowledge, understanding and practice.
The placement module requires students to complete at least 200 hours of placement with a pre-approved provider, with direct involvement and immersion in a sports therapy or related environment. This will allow students the opportunity to apply the knowledge they develop across the course, implement sports therapy interventions under supervision, develop practical skills unique to the role of the sports therapist, the opportunity to work within an inter-disciplinary team, and understand the role and scope of practice. Skills to promote reflective practice will be developed through online seminars with their assigned supervisor and university practice educator.
Two-day sports trauma course, delivered on campus. This will include EAP, primary A-E approach, sudden cardiac arrest, BLS and AED, airway management, limb threatening fractures/dislocations, head injuries and concussions, spinal injury management, extrication, and medical emergencies.
