Module description

This module focuses on the final stages of the rehabilitation process and returning the injured athlete back to the sports arena. Students will develop clinical reasoning skills that support exercise prescription for sports participation, with an emphasis on evidence-based practice adopted by healthcare professionals for a variety of injuries. Students will acquire fundamental skills that enable them to plan a progressive programme for any injury and assess an athlete’s readiness to return to sports training. As part of this module, students will also be introduced to the underpinning practical skills required for the delivery a return to sport exercise programme.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To develop students systematic understanding of the technical aspects of the fundamental techniques prescribed in Sports Therapy at the return-to-sport stage of the rehabilitation process.

  • To develop critical evaluation and reasoning skills to inform decision-making process for designing and administering a rehabilitation programme.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Justify and critically analyse the use of exercise for preventing injuries and preparing an athlete for sport participation.

  2. Demonstrate the ability to identify, and critically interpret a range of tests appropriate for establishing athlete readiness for sports participation.

  3. Design, and critically evaluate appropriate rehabilitation and injury prevention programmes for an athlete, demonstrating scientific reasoning for key elements of the programme at the return to sport stage of the rehabilitation process.

Learning and teaching methods

  • Weekly 2-hour face-to-face lecture x 10
  • Weekly 2-hour face-to-face practical session x 10

It is a PSRB requirement that students attend a minimum of 80% of all practical sessions in order to be eligible to sit the practical exam. Students will be supported to achieve this.
