Sports Therapists will work as independent practitioners. This module will cover common joint and regional injuries and provide the skills required to undertake a clinical assessment of a peripheral and spinal joints. This assessment process will be supported by evidence-based research to help students understand the assessment process and make clinically reasoned choices surrounding this process.
The aims of this module are:
- To equip you with the theoretical and practical skills to undertake a full clinical assessment of a patient/client/athlete.
- To optimise your ability to assess, plan and implement any treatment/rehabilitation/return to play plans to assist in returning the patient/client/athlete back to their full functional capabilities.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate practical competence and show systematic understanding of the assessment, clinical reasoning and diagnosis of sport and exercise related peripheral injuries.
- Demonstrate practical competence and show systematic understanding of the assessment, clinical reasoning and diagnosis of sport and exercise related spinal injuries.
- Demonstrate an evidence-based approach to clinical reasoning, and the ability to critically evaluate subjective and objective findings in different contexts.
Students will learn the theoretical underpinning and practical application of subjective and objective assessment techniques and use these to form working and differential diagnoses. Topics will include:
- Subjective assessment including special questions and red flags
- Assessment of ankle, knee, hip, shoulder, elbow and wrist, including all movements, orthopaedic and functional tests
- Assessment of cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions including all movements, orthopaedic and functional tests, and neurological examination
- Case studies
- Clinical reasoning
- Complex cases
- Weekly lecture material with accompanying slides - accessible at any time via Moodle and Listen Again
- Weekly self-directed learning activities (articles, reading list, videos) - accessible at any time - Moodle
- Face to face practical sessions - every week
- Lab bookings - students can book labs to practise outside of structured lectures/practical sessions
It is a PSRB requirement to attend a minimum of 80% of all practical sessions in order to be eligible to sit the practical exam. Students will be supported to achieve this.
