This module focuses on functional rehabilitation within the practice of a Sports Therapist. Students will develop clinical reasoning skills that support exercise prescription, with an emphasis on evidence-based practice adopted by healthcare professionals for a variety of injuries. Students will acquire fundamental skills that enable them to plan a progressive programme for any injury and assess an athlete's readiness to progress. As part of this module, students will also be introduced to the underpinning practical skills required for the delivery an of exercise programmes designed to support the rehabilitation process.
The aims of this module are:
- To develops students' systematic understanding of the technical aspects of the fundamental techniques prescribed in Sports Therapy.
- To develop critical evaluation and reasoning skills to inform decision-making process for designing and administering a rehabilitation programme.
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Justify and critically analyse the use of exercise for rehabilitation.
- Design, implement and critically evaluate appropriate individual rehabilitation programmes for individuals and groups, demonstrating scientific reasoning for key elements of the programme at the early, intermediate and late stage of the rehabilitation process.
- Demonstrate the ability to coach a range of exercises related to musculoskeletal rehabilitation.
- Introduction to the rehabilitation process (early-intermediate-late stages)
- Tissue specific considerations for rehabilitation
- Designing rehabilitation programmes, including progression/regression and exit criteria
- Ankle rehabilitation
- Knee rehabilitation
- Hamstring rehabilitation
- Hip rehabilitation
- Spine rehabilitation
- Shoulder rehabilitation
- Elbow, wrist, and hand rehabilitation

It is a PSRB requirement that students attend a minimum of 80% of all practical sessions in order to be eligible to sit the practical exam. Students will be supported to achieve this.
